What Does "Handing" Mean?
Handing simply refers to the side of the gate where your hinges are located. It determines the type of lock you’ll need for proper installation. This is important to get right before purchasing your lock and gate hardware.

How to Determine the Handing of Your Gate
Follow these foolproof steps to identify your gate's handing:

1. Stand Outside the Gate: Position yourself on the outside of the gate (the side where you would approach the lock). If the gate hasn’t been installed yet, visualize yourself standing outside.

2. Check the Hinges: Look at the gate and find the hinges. Are they on the left or right side of the gate frame?

   • Important: The direction your gate opens (inwards or outwards) does not matter here—only the position of the hinges!

3. Match the Handing to the Hinge Position:

   • If the hinges are on the right, you have a right-handed gate and will need a right-handed lock.
   • If the hinges are on the left, you have a left-handed gate and will need a left-handed lock.

It’s as simple as that! Just remember: hinge position = lock handing.
