Want to open your gate with a code and no wiring? These mechanical combination locks put the keypad on the gate itself. The first choice is what happens on the way out: use a handle, enter a code again, or press a quick-exit pad.
For a metal gate, Gatemaster's Superlock range offers all three arrangements. Timber and composite gates have surface-fixed choices too. If you want a keypad to operate a motor or electric lock instead, browse our electronic keypads.

| What you want | Start with | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Code entry outside, handle exit inside | Superlock single-sided BDGS | One mechanical keypad controls entry; the inside handle opens the gate without a code. |
| A code is needed on both sides | Superlock double-sided BDG | There is a keypad on each face. Choose this when coded exit is wanted as well as coded entry. |
| Code entry outside, push-pad exit inside | Superlock quick-exit BQDG | People leave by pressing the inside pad rather than turning a handle or entering a code. For a designated emergency escape route, ask us about the complete gate arrangement before ordering. |
| A code lock on a timber or composite gate | Surface-fixed BDGSW or double-sided BDGW | Choose the single keypad and inside handle, or a keypad on each side. These are surface-fixed versions, not the metal-frame bolt-on body. |
For a metal swing gate, we recommend starting with Gatemaster's Superlock 2.0. The BDGS and BDG models need no power, have adjustable latchbolts, latch when the gate closes and carry a five-year manufacturer's warranty. Choose BDGS if people should leave with a handle, BDG if they should enter a code on the way out, or BQDG if a push pad is preferable. The lock catches a gate that has closed; add a gate closer if the gate must also pull itself shut. For a timber or composite gate, start with the surface-fixed models instead.
If several people share the gate and codes change regularly, consider single-sided RapidReset BDGSRR or double-sided RapidReset BDGRR. RapidReset lets you change the code at the keypad without removing the lock. Standard BDGS and BDG are different models, so choose the RapidReset version if that feature matters to you.
For a metal-frame Superlock, measure the width of the frame section where it will bolt on and the gap between the closed gate and post. The Superlock 2.0 packs are offered for 10–30 mm or 40–60 mm frame sections, with parts sized for the chosen width. Note which side the lock will sit on and whether the gate opens inwards or outwards, and confirm where the latch will meet the keep. If you have an existing gate, send us photos and those measurements and we can help identify the right version.
For a timber or composite gate, choose a surface-fixed model and use its own gate-thickness and fixing instructions. A similar-looking metal-frame bolt-on lock is not a substitute.
For a timber or composite gate in a tougher outdoor position, consider the Borg BL2605 ECP. It has a marine-grade finish, a rim deadbolt and on-the-gate code changing, and is offered for gates or doors 60–80 mm thick. The similar-looking BL2005 is not the choice for an exposed gate. For any other model, tell us if the entrance is fully exposed or coastal so we can match the lock to the site rather than treating every keypad as equally weather resistant.
A mechanical keypad does not automatically include a key override. If a separate key must open the gate when the code is unavailable, tell us before ordering and we will confirm a model with that function. Do not assume a key cylinder is included with the BDGS, BDG, BQDG or BL2605 choices above.
Send us the reference, a photograph of each side of the gate and the receiving keep. We can help you find the same model or the closest suitable replacement, including a matching keep or shroud if that is all you need. If the gate slides sideways, see our sliding-gate locks for a hook and receiver made for that movement. If you need a separate lock around a bar or bolt instead, compare padlocks and padbars.
