A gate stop gives a moving gate a defined place to finish. The right part depends on whether the gate swings or slides and where the gate needs to make contact. This range includes ground stops for swing gates, end stops and receivers for sliding gates, and brackets or posts to mount them.

More about Gate stops for swing and sliding gates

Which stop does my gate need?

  • Two swing gates closing in the middle: CAIS LIMIT stops are generally used at the centre of the driveway, where the leaves meet the stop in the closed position. Choose the fixing style and height to suit the gate and driveway.
  • A swing gate reaching its open position: a CAIS ES stop can provide a point for the gate to meet. Check where the gate will contact it and how the stop can be fixed to the ground or other suitable surface.
  • A sliding gate reaching the end of travel: an ES stop can also be used if it meets the gate at a suitable height. Cantilever systems may additionally use the receiving parts described below.

For any of these, look at the gate in its intended open and closed positions before choosing the stop. The stop must meet a suitable part of the gate without obstructing its normal movement.

What do LAST, PADDOCK and PARK do on a sliding gate?

  • CAIS LAST S, M and L: lower receivers for cantilever gates. As the gate reaches its end position, the receiver stops sideways movement and supports the extended end of the gate, helping prevent it from sagging and protecting the cantilever running gear. Choose the version that belongs with the gate's cantilever system.
  • CAIS PADDOCK: a receiver that steadies a sliding gate against sideways sway, usually around the middle or upper part of the gate. It can be used with a suitable tracked or cantilever gate arrangement.
  • CAIS PARK: mounting brackets and posts used to hold compatible LAST or PADDOCK receivers. The range includes side-fixing brackets for a suitable brick pier, steel post or wooden post, and ground-mounted post options. Choose the mounting arrangement that fits the site and the named receiver.

These parts have different jobs: a PARK mounting piece does not replace a LAST or PADDOCK receiver. For the rest of a cantilever system, see cantilever sliding gate hardware.

Will a rubber stop prevent a gate from slamming?

A rubber-faced stop can soften the metal-on-metal clank when a gate reaches it, but it does not set the gate's speed. On an automated gate, speed and slowing are dealt with by the motor and control settings where the system provides them. A manual gate moves as fast as someone pushes it. If the gate is hitting the stop hard, have its movement and stopping position checked rather than relying on a rubber pad alone.

Does a motor's limit switch replace a physical stop?

No. The limit switch normally tells the motor when to stop. A sliding gate still needs effective physical travel stops so it cannot run beyond the ends of its travel or come off its supports if normal stopping fails. For a swing gate, check the exact operator instructions: some have built-in mechanical stops, while others need separate stops on the gate or ground. A stop does not replace a gate lock or the other safety measures required for an automated gate.

If you need a motor limit switch, magnet or another motor component rather than a physical gate stop, browse gate motor spares or ask us with the operator model.

Replacing a stop or unsure what to buy?

Send us a photograph showing where the gate meets the stop, another showing how the stop or receiver is mounted, and any readable product code. If it is a new gate, tell us whether it swings, runs on ground track or uses a cantilever system, and where it will finish moving. Email Metalines for help choosing the parts; we can advise from the information you provide but do not carry out site work.
